The Coalition Government today announces a further $1.1 million in assistance for workers who will lose their jobs at Arrium, including workers at the steelworks in Whyalla, South Australia.

Minister for Employment, Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash, said that in response to the significant number of job losses expected in the seaport town, the Government will boost the recent structural adjustment package put in place to assist all Arrium workers to make the transition into new employment.

“In December last year, the Government moved quickly to provide a $270,000 structural adjustment package to help retrenched workers find new employment as quickly as possible,” Minister Cash said.

“Today I am announcing the Government will commit additional resources and an expansion of the package.”

“Firstly, we will engage two employment facilitators—one based in Adelaide and the other in the Whyalla/Port Augusta region—to connect with affected workers, employment service providers and potential employers.

“Secondly, the employment support services will now also be available to all workers retrenched from Arrium, including from affected supply chain companies.”

Eligible workers will have access to intensive employment assistance available through the Government’s jobactive employment service, with dedicated service funding available to providers to help workers.

Minister Cash said the additional investment would be approximately $1.1 million over five years.

“This is a significant expansion, recognising the impact major employers have on local economies and our commitment to assist as many affected workers as possible,” Minister Cash said.

“The Government’s primary concern is in assisting affected workers back into gainful employment as soon as possible and in some cases this may require additional training or guidance.”
